Akiko Kuwagata graduated from the Hochschule fur Musik Detmold and the Hochschule fur Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart, and completed her Konzertexame. She is often commissioned to write and perform contemporary works, some of which are premiere performances. Currently based in Tokyo, Kuwagata is busy performing and organizing seminars on early music theory and playing methods. She also serves as a lecturer at the Harmony Hall in Matsumoto and the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music.
